Testing and Inspection
Foam Water Systems

What are the testing and inspection requirements?

NFPA 16 and 25 require that each foam water fire protection system be visually inspected each year to verify that it appears to be in good operating condition and free of physical damage.  Water flow must also be conducted annually to verify water supply and to check for proper operation of alarm devices.  Electronic interfaces such as waterflow and tamper switches are required to be tested semi-annually.  An actuation test should also be conducted annually to verify proper system operation.  Foam should be collected at the annual test and analyzed by refractometer to determine proper proportioning.  Every 5 to 10 years foam concentrate should be submitted to the manufacturer for testing.  Ancilliary systems such as fire pumps and detection systems are often present with foam systems and should be inspected and tested as required
