Testing and Inspection
Fire Hydrants

What are the testing and inspection requirements?

NFPA 24 requires that each hydrant be visually examined to verify that it appears to be in good operating condition and free of physical damage.  Inspections are required semi-annually for dry-barrel hydrants and annually for wet-barrel hydrants.  Water flow tests need to be conducted annually on hydrants to verify water supply, check for proper operation and check for proper drainage.  Dry-barrel hydrants that do not drain properly should be repaired as quickly as possible.
