Testing and Inspection
Fire Extinguishers

What are the testing and inspection requirements?

NFPA 10 requires that a visual examination be conducted to verify that each portable fire extinguisher is in its proper location, is not blocked, is fully charged, appears to be in good operating condition and free of physical damage.  Portable extinguishers typically are visually inspected each month.  Once per year the extinguisher is inspected and "tagged".  Most places of business have dry chemical ABC multipurpose extinguishers.  These portables are required to undergo internal inspections every 6 years and cylinder hydrostatic testing every 12 years.  Other types of extinguishers have various frequencies.
