Testing and Inspection
Detection Systems

What are the testing and inspection requirements?

NFPA 72 requires that each fire detection system be visually inspected to verify that it appears to be in good operating condition and free of physical damage.  The system is primarily required to have actuation test conducted twice per year.  Smoke, heat, duct and air sampling detectors must be tested semi-annually.  Other items such as remote annunciators, notification devices and battery voltages must also be tested semi-annually.  Smoke detector sensitivity testing is also required at various intervals.
